If you are sourcing sustainable activewear in 2026, you have almost certainly compared TENCEL and seaweed fiber. Both are positioned as eco-friendly, skin-friendly alternatives to polyester. Both appear in premium yoga, loungewear and underwear lines. And both are frequently described with the same words: soft, breathable, biodegradable, closed-loop.

So are they the same thing?

The honest answer: no – and the difference matters more for brands than for consumers. TENCEL is a specific lyocell brand from Lenzing. “Seaweed fiber” is a whole family of technologies, and the way the seaweed is incorporated changes everything about what the fabric can do.

Before the differences, the shared foundation. TENCEL lyocell and the seaweed-TENCEL blends we produce both:

Where TENCEL Stops and Seaweed Fiber Begins

TENCEL (Lyocell): cooling softness, no added function

TENCEL is a pure cellulose fiber. What it delivers is baseline excellence: silky drape, breathability, moisture management and a cool touch that makes it a favourite for premium yoga wear. What it does not deliver is any active function – no antibacterial effect, no odor control, no sun protection, no mineral release. If you want those, they must be added as finishes, and finishes wash off.

Seaweed fiber: the function is the point

Seaweed fiber is engineered differently depending on the producer. There are two mainstream routes:

  • SeaCell-style (particle embedding) – seaweed particles blended into lyocell fiber. Adds minerals and antioxidants; effectiveness is documented to reduce by roughly 12-22% after 50 washes.
  • Alginate composite fiber (Healcell route, used by ZESTOUTFIT) – alginic acid extracted from farmed seaweed is compounded into the polymer masterbatch, so every filament carries the function. No coating, no finish – the function cannot wash off.

Choose Seaweed Alginate Fiber if…

  • Your product claims need to survive washing – antibacterial, deodorizing, UPF claims must be fiber-level, not finish-level
